A recipient of the National Arts Council Bursary (Overseas), Sok Wah graduated from Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney in 2002 with a Bachelor of Music Studies. She studied under Richard Miller, Timpanist of Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Daryl Pratt (Head of Department), a well-known jazz vibraphonist to receive an all-rounded education in classical and contemporary percussion. On top of that, she received valuable coaching form visiting artists like Neil Grover (Boston Pop, Boston Symphony), Arthur Lipner (U.S. Jazz Vibraphonists) and Leigh Howard Stevens (International Marimba Artist). Her early mentors and people who have given her invaluable music exposure include prominent percussionists of Singapore, Mr Ngoh Kheng Seng (SCO), Mr Lim Meng Keh (SSO), Mr Markiewicz Grzegorz (SSO), Mr Quek Ling Kiong (SCO) and Mr Tama Goh.

Upon graduation, Sok Wah received the NAC Emerging Artist Fund and held a recital titled ‘Sounz’ at the Young Musicians’ Society auditorium. She also held a lunch hour performance at the Centre for the Arts under the Shell-Esso Campus series and performed the premiere of the commissioned piece for the launch of the Garden Fund at the Istana. To date, she has also been invited to perform with Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Lyric Opera, Singapore Dance Theatre and Singapore Festival Orchestra.

A member of the SYO for the year 1999, 1997 marked Sok Wah’s foray into the professional music scene as she started to freelance for the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Since then, her dedication to the art of percussion has given her the opportunities to perform a wide genre of music not only in both local and international stages, but in the recording studios too. Believing in creating awareness in the art of percussion and nurturing young talents, Sok Wah currently teaches percussion and gives percussion master classes in many local schools and tertiary institutions.
